Laser & Luxury: Inside Brisbane’s Eleventh Heaven with Dr. Ricky Sia

Hello, listeners. It’s Trish Hammond here from the Transforming Bodies podcast. And today, I’m actually joined by Dr Ricky Sia. Now he’s a cosmetic physician based in Teneriffe in Brisbane and he has a practice called Eleventh Heaven and this is where I come to get my injectables. So today, I’m gonna have a chat with Dr Ricky and find out what it is behind the man who makes me look as good as I believe that I look. So welcome Dr. Sia.

 

Dr Ricky

Thank you so much. I’m Ricky. Very nice to meet you all.

 

Trish

Lovely. So Dr. Ricky, tell me, first of all, how long have you been or roughly a doctor? And how long since you’ve been in the aesthetic space? Like, what made you move into that area?

 

Dr Ricky

Well, I have been a doctor for more than a decade, and almost 10 years in the medical aesthetics space. I moved into this space just because I like designing. I like beautiful things.

I thought it was, you know, the best to get into by marrying these two is to do medical aesthetics.

 

Trish

It’s so interesting you say that because I’ve always believed that you can get a lot of people out of the aesthetic practitioners, but there’s a certain number of people that have the aesthetic eye and I believe that you’re one of those people. So interesting, you should say that because I do believe that your work is art. So tell me, when you started your clinic, like, how did you work out? Because I know you’ve got some amazing devices here and you don’t scheme costs. So tell me how do you decide what you decide to use in your clinic to get the best results for your patients?

 

Dr Ricky

Well, so from my point of view, the two main factors I consider. Number 1 is what do my patients need? And number 2 is more from a commercial business perspective. Is this investment a worthwhile investment? So a few main factors that I consider when I pick technology devices or skincare products. Everything that we have in the clinic is based on what I think is going to work best for my patients based on science and their needs and ethics as well. And from a business perspective, then it will also be the cost, if this is an investment that’s going to be worthwhile. But the first thing I consider first is what is actually going to work the best for my patients based on that needs.

Trish

Okay. So being a results driven clinic, just share with us like number one, what’s your favourite thing to do in the clinic? Actually, what do you see as the biggest sort of like where someone can come in and, like, walk away. I was like, wow. That’s made a big difference.
Like, what’s your personal favourite?

Dr Ricky

Well, my personal favourites will be injectables because it’s quite quick to perform and when performed appropriately professionally and safely, it gives you results straight away. That has always been the number 1 favourite. But I guess there’s been a bit of a shift in trends or I think patient needs as well as skin health. So one thing that we do actually recommend a lot is to get a clearer, much more uniform skin tuned. And so one of my favourite treatments is using our BBL, and I’ll give treatments to give our patients a better looking skin.

Trish

Perfect. And look, I know that pretty much almost anyone can have BBL treatments, but I also know that just recently, a friend of mine came to have a BBL treatment pump because she had a bit of a spot up here that needed to be looked at, you wouldn’t treat it with BBL. So can you tell us, like like, it’s not just about getting people in the door and getting them to get whatever they want. So how do you distinguish, like, what makes you treat someone and not treat someone like, can you tell us a bit more about what the goal was with Sandy?

Dr Ricky

So in terms of this spot that you mentioned, basically, we have so when we do any skin treatments, one of the first things that we check is whether the patient has had any recent skin checks preferably within 12 months. And any spots or lesions that we think are a bit suspicious, we prefer them to be checked about by their skin physician first before we perform any treatments. So if we do notice anything that can look a bit can speak of us, but not to like, you know, obviously, cancerous looking. What we do is that we just can work around that. We just taped the lesions and just made sure that they got checked by their own skin doctor at the first instance.

Trish

Okay. And, look, I know you have, what do you call it, like, clients that, you like to take on clients as part of your not family, but, you know, like someone comes to see you, they become part of your clinic and whatever. So what do you recommend for someone who’s just starting out and they’re looking for a practice and they wanna align themselves with someone who’s going to take care of their skin care needs or their aesthetic needs or whatever. So can you explain the process from if someone walks in the door like what your consultation processes and how you determine what it is or, first of all, what they want. And I guess, how you determine the difference between what you want, what they want, and what they actually need to achieve the outcome that they want.

Dr Ricky

So the first thing or the first concept I discussed with our patient is we’re trying to create something that’s long term from them. It is also an investment for them. Often patients can sing one or two particular things. And I often describe this as the icing on the cake, but really what we need is to bake the cake first. So once we discuss all this, whether it’s going to be structural or to help with wrinkles or to help with skin or skin care products. We do spend a lot of time sitting down just to discuss all this with them and we formulate a long term plan for them. And then we developed this close relationship and we worked together.

Trish

Okay. And tell me, so moving forward, like, I know that like, I see you all the conference and stuff of that. So how important I know it’s important to you, but why is it so important to stay up to date with everything that’s happening and know what’s going on so that you’ve got the latest things for your patients. But why is that so important for you?

Dr Ricky

Well, I think for me, the first thing I think about is, like, how much like, how home do you want to be with your craft? And how good do you want to be? I think that’s the simplest question to ask. And for me, that’s a bit yes. And I want to be the best as possible to be able to give that back to my patients. So yeah. So professionals continued medication. This is really important.

Trish

Awesome. And you moved into new premises. I don’t even know how long it’s been now, but I’m new to the old premises. You purposely built this for yourself and for the clinic. Didn’t you tell us a bit about when you plan that because you know your colours are great and it very much shows who you are as a person, but obviously, that’s your design skills coming out.
But how did you even get the idea?

Dr Ricky

Well, I mean, like, in terms of those colour palettes and the elements that happened in the clinic, like, I participated and sourced a lot of the items, colours in our clinic. And I wanted this to be a welcome and environment, very relaxing. So that when our patients come saying, they feel this is not typical to the medical clinics. They’re coming. They feel pampered. They get a sense of unstated luxury, but it’s not overwhelming for them and that’s the way I’m creating. And so far, we have a lot of feedback coming from patients saying that when they come here, they feel relaxed. And that’s exactly what I want to do.

Trish

It’s definitely a, like, friendly vibe. Like, you don’t feel like you’re gonna come here and because you do you have you can go to clinics and you feel like, oh, do they really want me here? You know, whereas this is comfortable and inviting. And obviously, you’ve created that space perfectly. So is there anything in your plans for the future as to where you see you know, like, where you see the business going, like, because I know we’ve spoken about because I’m a great believer that he have to make regular appointments get the outcomes that you want, but there’s anything in plans for the future. People are busy. They find it, like, I know for myself. I look at myself. Oh, god. I need to go and get done because I’m looking really haggard or whatever. But is there, what can you do to help people to sort of know, not when they need something, but to keep them on some sort of a plan?

Dr Ricky

Great question, Trish. So from the basic, like, or for the most basic stuff, like, our system automatically recalls patients at certain intervals. For certain treatments, they always get a reminder from us anyway. But we do get a lot of requests or suggestions from regular patients where they would like to be able to look after their skin a little bit more regularly. So we are going to introduce some treatment options almost like a skin fit type program, if you like, where we offer our patients monthly treatments. And we send out reminders to them. We make the appointments for them, and we take care of the, like, monthly plans from my end just to make things so much more streamlined for our patients ranging from, like, very pampering to relapsing treatments such as early treatment using Healite all the way to much more of our anti ageing treatments such as BBL.

Trish

Yeah. Okay. So basically, like, if I go and have a message every month, it’s gonna be the same sort of thing you can come and have, like, an an LED or, you know, that sort of thing and just like plan your year out, I guess, want to achieve the objectives that I wanna make sure my skin looks good all the time, basically. So that’s gonna kind of help with that.

Dr Ricky

Yeah. Absolutely. Like, at the end of the day, this is, for me, how I see all this is an investment. So we do to our patient that you will require maintenance. Just like a house, a car, everything just needs to be maintained. So in order to assist with this, we have, like, much more relaxing type treatments where it’s backed by science such as Healite. We know patients often fall asleep when they have LED treatments for 50 minutes. So it’s a good way just to come in and relax, if the patient wants to take a meditate while they’re under the light, and we also have BBL treatments, which takes about 15 to 30 minutes to do depending on the area size. And BBL is one of the best anti-ageing treatments that we can offer with minimal to no downtime. It’s quite comfortable to have. And it’s backed by multiple papers and clinical results are being talked about worldwide to improve the anti ageing benefits on the skin.

Okay and what are the things I really enjoy is I know that you’re committed to doing, like, information sessions with existing clients or prospective clients or whatever, but I love it that you kind of open up your clinic and sort of kind of teach people in in a group format as to what’s possible and show variables and talk about the treatments that you do. So your commitment to that, can you tell us how someone, like, can we find you?

Dr Ricky

Lovely. And I think that’s half the reason I like coming here as well because after I see you, I can go and get some lovely food or some clothes.

Dr Ricky

Yeah. For sure, like, I mean, our area is very lively, very trendy, very also but also very relaxing with lots of amazing restaurants, cafes around, and we have a very sort of discrete location as well. So for those of our patients who prefer more privacy. Certainly, our clinic is very private.
