Trish

Hello listeners is Trish Hammond from the Aesthetics Uncensored Podcast, and today I am joined with the delightful Shann Lee. Now Shann Lee is the manager, owner and director of So Haute Skin. Now she’s a registered nurse and a dermal therapist and has been in this industry since she left school. And today we’re going to talk about one of the devices that she has in her clinic, which is called the Harmony XL Pro and this device can actually have different handpieces to and it does a whole modality of treatment. So we’re gonna have a rundown of what it is, and you know why she does what she does. So welcome, Shann.

Shann

Thank you. Thank you for having me.

Trish

Oh, thank you so much for being here today. We’ve been looking forward to this for ages. Hey,

Shann

I know, I know. Finally it’s here. It’s great.

Trish

I know. I know. We’re finally here, so excellent. So first of all, tell us about you, so like you’ve been in this industry since you left school? And you know, that was like five years ago, right? Yes. In 1992, no, no, no. So what? Why this industry? What is it that you love about it?

Shann

I think this sense back from when I was a child, I always had a fascination with skincare. And for whatever reason, I don’t know, but I loved skincare. And that, I guess, took me to, I guess find the path of what I want to do when I left school, and I had a friend at the time whose mom was a beauty therapist. And I remember thinking, Wow, that’s amazing. You know, like, she does believe in skin treatments and it was really fascinating. So I went the path of doing beauty therapy, and then dermal therapies and then of course, went on to our ends afterwards. But that was probably the really hard thing to put a finger on what I was actually attracted to, but just skincare in general.

Trish

Yeah, right. And I guess because I was always really into that as well when I was younger. And how was it a beauty therapy but my parents wouldn’t let me and I ended up doing it as I was a bit older but yeah, so annoying because I think I missed my calling in life too because I reckon been nothing. Like really ultimately that’s what I would love to be doing what you’re doing some very, very envious way of doing it.

Shann

So I feel very fortunate to be in this long and grown with the industry, this long. I’m glad I came to the topic. But my parents were the same. They didn’t want me to really do beauty therapy, they don’t like or no, do something different. But that’s where my passion was.

Trish

Yeah. In those days, it wasn’t, like it wasn’t, it was so different to what it is now because now it’s gone. It’s so much more advanced. It’s not just therapy, it’s the demo therapies, the injecting, the machines.

Shann

Absolutely.

Trish

Yes, it’s just so broad, you know, these days, and you know, and it also helps that you know, you can look good.

Shann

It does without having to go under the knife, there’s so many things that you can do now without having to have surgery to look and stay rejuvenated and look fresh.

Trish

And even if you do want to go down the surgery path, you have really good skin to start with anyway.

Shann

Yeah, that’s a really good point. Um, I think just going back and I did surgical nursing so often looked after plastic patients and that’s true, they do they will get a facelift in a neck lift. But if the skin got age spots and vascular lesions in the tissues, then all those things still remain. The surgery doesn’t take care of that. So that’s where the skin still needs to be treated as well.

Trish

Yep, yep, that makes a lot of sense. So tell us tell us about the Harmony because you were telling me that you’ve got too.

Shann

Yes, I’ve got the Harmony XL platform so I started with the first Alma Harmony back in 2010. And it was I think at the time when we were looking for lasers we went through and looked at you know, every laser on the market we ended up choosing the Alma Harmony because it just had so many different modalities. One of the big things was it didn’t have a consumable at the time which was a huge bonus in any kind of business. Unfortunately, had consumable the price for the actual patient can go sky high, that was a big thing why we chose the harmony as well as the fact that it had some pain free modules. Again with lasers first come out they were awful, they were like torture to have done Harmony was one of the ones that were had like pain free options, which is remarkable.

Trish

You’re right and so so basically you have your device which is the Harmony and then you have different pieces that are attached to it to do different solutions or auto cheat sheet to treat different things on patients.

Shann

That’s how you do that you do you have the one type form and then there are lots of different hand pieces and you can get in pieces you know from hair removal to treat vascular laser to ablative fractional laser to non ablative fractional laser there’s just an absolute myriad of hand pieces to suit absolutely every skin condition that you come across.

Trish

Okay, so let’s go through them. So like once, what’s one of the things that it can do?

Shann

Probably I guess one of the most popular treatments that we do in clinic is a combination of phototherapy and fractional ablative laser so the phototherapy is the one that’s an intense pulse that basically picks up vascular and pigmented lesions so you age spots and redness in the skin. There are two ways of using it which is wonderful too so you can do the inmotion which is really unique to Alma and it’s virtually painless you feel a little bit of warmth that’s a really comfortable treatment to have done and you can also spot treat with it so if you had some others had the odd spot on their skin like the age spot you can go in there and just you know give it a few little taps with the the actual laser and you know it literally disappears within a week or so. We then follow up with the erbium fractional laser the iPixel and it’s incredible so it’s a fractionated ablative laser that takes up tiny little columns of tissue resurfacing the skin you’ve got you know maybe about four or five days downtime. The results are incredible. So doing those two, two in one I guess treatments to your patients. The results are absolutely outstanding.

Trish

Yeah right. And so do you just like, can have any be used for like a regular like set for example like a bit of a sharp?

Shann

Yes, yeah. Our job laser for sure would be the ClearLift laser. So ClearLift is incredible, so it’s a non ablative fractionated laser and it’s quite a high power so it actually stimulates and tightens the skin. It stimulates collagen and tightens the skin. It helps with pigment and redness. There’s zero downtime, there’s zero discomfort. It’s really really quick. I think it’s known in the industry. It’s nicknamed like the lunchtime facelift and it is great. So use it around the eyes in really sensitive areas over the lips. The neck is fantastic if you’ve got crepey skin, that crepey skin is incredible when you treat it with a clear lip because it literally you can just see it tighten up, it’s amazing. So it’s probably one of the I guess the best Jewish that we have in the clinic.

Trish

Okay, and that’s part of the harmony isn’t it?

Shann

that’s all part of the Harmony. Yeah, so that’s another handpiece, so that’s part of them. So that’s probably just covering what I spoke about three different hand pieces. So you’ve got what’s called a Dye-VL und Dye- SR, which treat both pigment and vascular lesions. You’ve got your fractional ablative laser which removes tissue, so that’s for resurfacing. And then if you’re looking at clearly veins, that’s a non ablative. If someone comes and says I’ve got a special event, I can’t have downtime, but I need results, that’s the one that we’d go for the ClearLift.

Trish

Okay, so you’ve got your three different variables, or your three different hand pieces and that’s the treatment they can do. So you’ve got your pigment in vascular lesions. So someone comes in, they’ve got like a bit of a brown spot or the vascular is the vein ones. Hey,

Shann

It is, yes, yeah. So when you’ve got those red veins, or even facial flushing, for people that tend to get just that redness that your theme through the skin, it’s brilliant just for reducing that as well. But we have a few different hand pieces as well, we’ve got the tightening handpiece, the NIR. So that’s another one that we actually added on to the platform, and we just acquired the ClearSkin Pro, which is the new acne laser.

Trish

Okay, so acne laser. So tell me about that.

Shann

Well, that’s a new one we just got back before we actually closed down before got locked down. But it’s a brand new one out from Alma that targets again, hones in on acne, so on active acne, which is a really important thing. So a lot of lasers can’t be used on active acne, because they’re too stimulating, they actually can cause a further breakout to the skin. This particular laser is designed to break down the actual bacteria in the skin. It also has a slight vacuum, which helps to actually vacuum out debris and if you have someone who’s got those really big painful cystic pastures, you can actually spot treat them. And within a very short period of time, the patient’s getting a result of that particular problem, which is incredible.

Trish

So if someone had acne they could and even if it was an active acne, you actually use it to treat it.

Shann

Especially if it’s active. Yes, yeah. So, so for those people where normally stuck with a pill or some other some other way to treat their skin, lasers normally rolled out in that case, this particular one, we don’t have to rule it out, we can actually give them some relief, reduce the inflammation, reduce the bacteria in the skin, but also you’re treating the scarring at the same time. So it does quite a lot.

Trish

Yeah, right. And so with something like that, so if someone came to you with acne, is it a one off treatment or or it’s a course of treatments that you had?

Shann

Yeah, it looks like it’s normally going to be a series Yeah, they’re normally a series of treatments. So anywhere from, you know, maybe six treatments or so it’ll depend on the severity of the acne when they come in to how quickly they respond to the treatment as well. But normally, when you’re treating acne because it’s normally caused by hormones. It’s something that needs more than one treatment.

Trish

And that makes little sense and what I like about that to treat acne is the fact that like you know a lot of younger people you know get acne and then they generally won’t follow protocols with skincare or anything like that whereas this way they can just come in have it done go watch right come back, go away, come back and then it’s fixed.

Shann

Yes. Yeah. And I think that’s that’s a really important thing because you are right, like a lot of people especially if they’re younger acne patients they can’t afford a lot of the skincare that is out there so getting them on to some good basic homecare that’s affordable but having a really powerful treatment that we can use that target so many areas of the actual cycle of anxiety with you know, just one treatment is very unique.

Trish

Yeah, totally. And so is it just the face that you would treat or is there other?

Shann

Anyway you have acne or anywhere with any of our lasers actually, you can treat anywhere on the body so I’ve treated sort of acne obviously, anywhere back chest face neck, anywhere that actually appears with fractional laser with treated stretch marks on breasts on thighs scarring so there’s you’re not limited at all so we’ve treated most recently with the OB my treated some actual puncture wounds where someone had varicose veins taken out so many years ago and they had these brown marks on the skin and you know it come up yet incredibly well so they didn’t want to wear shorts because they had some pretty distinctive brown scarring for where that operation was you know occurred and it lightened it up you know with just two treatments It was incredible so just they could put fake tan on the brown spots weren’t sort of showing up anymore so it was a really good effective freeman.

Trish

Yeah, totally and so what are the other because I’m having a look here I’m looking at before and after photos. Like what’s the tone and texture?

Shann

Tone or texture of the skin? Yeah, yeah.

Trish

How can they fix that? Like how is that device treats on that?

Shann

So if you’re looking again you can do combinations of treatments which are always the best way I feel when you’re treating the skin because you can target so many things all at once in one treatment, texture and time so when you’re looking at you know the texture is going to be you know your open pores, the some people have like a coarse textured skin, when you’re looking at the tone is losing a little bit of elasticity so when you’re honing in on both of those things, you’re tightening up or skin, you’re obviously getting that firmer look to the skin itself. There’s a lot that can be refreshed within those two treatments. Normally I would say clearly it would be one of those targets for texture and tone. So you’re getting a clear return to the skin so you’re losing to save your blotches. Especially coming out from season to season when you have those dramatic changes in weather. A lot of people get very blotchy; they can also get these little underlying kind of spots on the skin. So that’s what we’re treating when we’re using things like ClearLift and erbium and that’s the texture and tone benefits that you get from lasers.

Trish

Okay, and am I right in that because you were saying intense pulse light before so this actually works for tattoo removal as well.

Shann

There is a laser that’s what we don’t do. We actually haven’t ever done the tattoo removal but the Alma does have a tattoo removal modality as well. That’s I’m not that. Yeah, I’ve never really done a tattoo removal. I’m not that versed on it, but I know they do have a handpiece for that.

Trish

Yeah, right. Like, you got a problem. We can fix it.

Shann

Yes, yes, exactly. This is a thing, isn’t it?

Trish

Yeah, exactly. It’s like there’s so many things. But I was gonna ask you, can you tell me a little bit more about the combined therapy?

Shann

Yeah, combined therapies are targeted to each patient. So if someone could come in and see me with, say, fine lines under the eyes or areas of the skin with pigmentation and sun damage will combine two types of laser to effectively treat but dramatically treated in one treatment. So we would use say like a IPL handpiece. We treat pigmentation first so you’re doing your pigmentation treatment as you would normally. And then we’d go straight over with say an ablative laser like the iPixel. And the ablative laser the iPixel would you know resurface the skin from the inside out. So the results of that patient will get you know within a week to a fortnight or outstanding you know reduce pigment you reduce redness, the pores are tighter, the lines are less and then it goes to stimulate you know, Neo collagen over the next six months as well. So the results are just what you get in the very beginning. It’s what happens to the following months and that’s a really effective treatment to do I think anytime you can combine different laser handpieces to treat a whole face or whole area. You’re going to cut down the amount of times a patient has to come back and see you so they’re not having to come in for 10 treatments, they may need to see you just for one, or they may need to see you for just maybe three treatments.

Trish

Yeah, right. And I’ve often wondered about this slide because I like to have regular treatments. But is this something that you could do with your rejuvenation kind of thing? You know, like, have a touch up every so often like, Hey, have a facial?

Shann

Absolutely. Yeah, look, I think when we get to a certain age, facials can go out the window some somewhat, and that’s where I would recommend say, if someone was doing like the ultimate rejuvenation would be doing your pigment your vascular in your erbium laser, I would recommend that for everyone once a year. I do that for my own skin every year. It’s usually Christmas Eve, it’s about the only time I get it. So I look pretty ordinary on Christmas Day but it’s been amazing that I’ve done them since I was 35. And just the stimulation of collagen in the skin like I look back at photos of my skin you know before I started in my skin looks better and younger now than what it did from when I was obviously a lot younger than in so with ClearLift laser that’s another one that we just do that quite often as a regular like of facial treatment and in place of the facial. So we often do those as a monthly treatment for many of our patients. And they’ll come in and get a full face and neck down. It keeps the skin tight and clean and also stimulating that collagen constantly.

Trish

Yeah, that’s perfect. That’s what I love and doing some back pain again, because some I’ve heard it so many times where it’s like no, no doesn’t hurt, but it actually really does hurt.

Shann

Yeah. Yeah, I love it. That’s exactly right. I think that’s probably Alma’s best, they have the handpieces that normally induce a lot of pain in your IPL handpieces. Alma has the inmotion technology, which is really unique. So you’re moving the handpiece over the skin, you’re not doing a pulse, which is like a bolt of lightning to the skin that really hurts, and you’re still getting the results. So do you have to sit there and say to your patient, you don’t have to worry, you can relax, you probably enjoy the treatment, they feel warmth, that’s usually about it. That’s a big thing and some of the ClearLift if that’s again, one of the most popular lasers. So when we’re using that zero pain, it’s quite nice. It’s quite relaxing and to be able to say to your patients, you can rest assured whatever you heard about other people getting laser treatments done. That’s not going to be the case here.

Trish

Yeah, right. And so tell me a little bit about your client feedback. And  why they’re loving it, like why are your clients coming back?

Shann

Yeah, ultimately, it is the results over everything. So I think that when you can do it again, the combination therapy is great. But even now single treatments, I think people see results really, really quickly and having the variety of handpieces that we’re not stuck with using just a laser platform or whatever it came with, we can obviously alter the handpiece to suit the skin type. So therefore we do get really good results and it’s definitely the results that keep people coming back.

Trish

Yeah, yeah. I was just like, I’m having a read of what we’ve spoken about before. And I’m going to jump back to combination therapies. So with the skin, like you’re saying that you can’t beat the combo of the phototherapy and the erbium? Yeah. And that’s something that you should do once a year.

Shann

Once a year. Yes. If you could do one finger once a year, it’s got to be that. Yeah, absolutely.

Trish

I absolutely agree with you, when I’m saying like, once a year just got to go and do that something’s a little bit more hardcore. Kind of just, you can kind of being in the industry, though I sit on the perimeter of the industry, really, but for you guys being in the industry, like I look at people who work in the industry, and they have frickin amazing looking skin all the time, myself, and then months of the terracotta look like crap, why have I got these lines here? But yes, that’s your maintenance, hey, it’s not just about having something done once and then you’re done. That’s right, maintenance, that commitment.

Shann

So commitment. It’s a total commitment. It’s like anything, it’s like if you’re working out or have a really good health plan, eating plan, all those sorts of things that does take that commitment, and you can’t really let it go. You don’t want to spend a lot of money on getting your skin into really good condition too early and not come and do anything for it, for the next five years. So once every year, like that is enough to stimulate collagen, keep that collagen and that tightness in that, that structure of the skin nice and firm. And also, resolve any issues that you may come across in that time, too.

Trish

Yeah, yeah. And so tell us with regards the benefits of the system, like I know we’ve kind of run through them, but can you just kind of give us what you think are the benefits of that system?

Shann

Yeah, absolutely. So I think the biggest benefit is there’s probably two is the amount of treatments that you can cover with the actual Harmony XL Pro the platform so you’re not limited whether you’re doing spider veins, vascular lesions on the face pigmentation, you name it, wrinkles, scarring everything. And I think the pain free modules, they’re really, really important. It’s quite daunting to go for a procedure and know that you’re going to experience some kind of discomfort or pain, but to be able to really reassure your patients that they’re going to have a really comfortable treatment is just incredible. So that’s definitely, Alma to, I think, start components to grow.

Trish

And you know what, people don’t want pain?

Shann

No, no, no one does. Who wants pain? No, no, yeah, that’s exactly right. If it’s painful, I want to be knocked out. Like, I don’t want to be there and experience it.

Trish

That general anaesthetic

Shann

Absolutely. I don’t want to know about it. If it’s painful. Yeah.

Trish

Yeah, exactly. So. So how does the harmony work in your practice? So like, like, is it on virtually all the time?

Shann

Yeah it is, actually. So we have therapists that do a lot of the laser treatments myself as well. And they’re going all day, which is why we’ve got a second platform that we’ve just added as well. So yeah, they don’t stop. And that’s probably a big variety of what we do is skin treatments, I do a lot of the injectable treatments myself, and then they bounce off each other, you’re getting anti wrinkle treatment, or you’re getting your filler, and then your skin’s looking on par as well, for really natural results. So they don’t stop our lasers from going flat out every day.

Trish

Yeah, right. And just as a last question, like how, you know, how are Alma to deal with like, you know, with the follow up solid in the training or that something? Can you give us a little bit of a snapshot of that?

Shann

Yeah, of course. So they’ve been an incredible company to deal with, they’re incredibly supportive, they offer everything you never have to I guess try and track them down for information. They’re always available and checking in to see how you’re going and what they can offer you. And that’s absolutely so important when you’ve got a business and you’ve got, new staff coming in, that are wanting to learn. They’re available, even with this whole lockdown situation, they’ve been available for online training and for updating, and I said, you can just always send a picture of someone’s skin and say, hey, look, this is what I’m dealing with. What do you think? I want a second opinion. They’ve been marvelous. The support is just outstanding.

Trish

Yeah, I know that sounds great. Tell us as we finish off, so just give us a little bit of a plug about your business like where it is and why now when are open at the moment, because we already hopefully, people listen to this when it’s not in lockdown as well.

Shann

Yeah. Yeah. So yeah, so I’m located in Poynton Place. It’s Thornton, which is about half an hour from Newcastle, half an hour from the Hunter Valley. We’re in a medical center there and we offer literally everything in aesthetic from your lasers, your chemical peeling, needling to all the anti wrinkle injections and skinboosters and fillers.

Trish

Yeah. Amazing. Thank you so much for joining us today.

Shann

No, thank you. It’s been wonderful.

Lovely. So listeners, if you do want to get in contact with Shann, you could do that on her website, which is So Haute Skin. And that’s sohauteskin.com and you’ll find everything on a lot of the things that she does on there as well. Otherwise, you can get in touch with her. Yeah, from the website on socials as well. And yeah, go and check it out. So thanks so much for joining us Shann.

Shann

Thank you. It’s been wonderful.

Trish

Have a great day. You too. Thank you. Bye
