Transcript- Lourette from Dermology – How It Began

Trish

Hello, listeners. It’s Trish Hammond here from the Aesthetics Uncensored podcast. And today I am over the moon excited because I’m here with Lourette Du Toit and she is actually the Owner of Dermology in South Africa and there’s three clinics and a new one about to open. But where I kind of met Lourette was actually on social media. I watched her reels and had a chat with her today. So welcome to Lourette.

Lourette

Thank you so much, Trish. It’s amazing and I’m so grateful to be talking to you today.

Trish

Not as excited as I am, I can tell you. So tell me so first of all, so how did you start in your career doing aesthetics?

Lourette

I moved from working in the game lodges for about five years, I moved to Johannesburg with my husband and I joined a small company that just opened its doors called Dermology and I was hooked. There was a BBLs machine, and I started using it, and I could not stop. And from there, I just excelled. I did more courses, I did more training and today, 10 years later, I’m the CEO of the Dermology group.

Trish

That’s fantastic. And I love it because it’s not a rags to riches story, but it’s where you come out from a different industry and go into a new industry. Is that right?

Lourette

Yeah, so I did some stomatology. So I was in the beauty industry already, but more focused on the spa side. And I immediately went into management, it’s my thing, business is my thing. I just needed to settle the industry I wanted to run a business in so I went from Spa and when I went to the aesthetic clinics, I was like, this is what I want to do. And that’s where I took my stomatology career a bit further and ventured into the aesthetic side. And yes, that was it for me.

Trish

Oh, fantastic. And, your clinic like you only do laser pretty much at your clinic, don’t you?

Lourette

Yes, so we’ve got everything else. We’ve got needling chemical peels, all of that the whole point is to create healthy skin right? For me, I quickly realised that the best way to create healthy skin is to go the laser route to laser and light and I identified that as my niche. And so when I market or when we do marketing about Dermology, when I talk about Dermology on social or write articles, it’s about our niche, and that’s laser and light. And by doing that we are able to create healthy skin for our patients, and I know we’re gonna get the results for them.

Trish

That’s so good. And like I met you on social media and like, I love your reels, but tell us, so what made you get started on social media? And I know it’s really hard as well to sort of put yourself out there because you really become vulnerable because people see you and they know it and you’re worried about you know, they’re gonna like me. So how did that start for you? And how has it been?

Lourette

Interesting is that I’m actually quite introverted and in a large group of people or new people, I really have to make a conscious effort to open my mouth. But my husband’s a wildlife photographer, and he’s quite active on social media, so I sort of learned from him. And when I discovered reels and videos, and talking and public speaking and all of that, I just fell absolutely in love with it. My passion is laser and light and the more I can talk about it, the better I feel about it. And so yeah, at the moment, you give me a stage, a mic, a camera, I, it’s my introverted side that just fades away completely. I think my passion then just completely takes over.

Trish

You know, it’s funny you say that because I’ve always believed that people that are introverted are really extroverts on the inside. And people that are extroverts are introverts on the inside. It’s almost like your true you comes out?

Lourette

Absolutely. Yeah, no, I absolutely agree with that.

Trish

Totally. And so your Sciton clinic, because we had a chat last night, and you told me that you only have Sciton devices. So how did you actually number one decide to have Sciton devices? Number two, why do you have Sciton devices? What makes them better in your mind?

Lourette

I’ve used a few different laser machines in my life or in my career doing aesthetics. And like I said, I started off with BBL as very straightforward. We all know what it looks like but it’s when you just cannot compare this IPL or this brand of IPL with anything else. Yes, the results are good. I mean, we all know that. But just from a practical point of view using this machine, it’s so much easier to use it to work around the face. I have another IPL in my clinic that we haven’t touched for many, many years because it doesn’t compare to the BBL that we’re using. So from a business point of view as well, it’s not just about the product, but also the support that I’m going to get from the supplier. And we see it with all the other things as well products that we purchase and or stuck in the business as well. I can have a good product, but if I’m not going to have the support from the supplier, then it’s kind of pointless. Because you can have another machine in your clinic. That’s also maybe good but if you never gonna hear from them and they’re not going to engage or offer training or anything like that, then it doesn’t work for me as a business. My business won’t grow. I’m not going to be happy so my team’s not going to be happy and it all filtrates through it’s a whole snowball.

Trish

Yeah. Okay, so what do you offer at your clinic then?

Lourette

I’ve got BBL, BBL HERO, MOXI. I’ve got the Joule, two Joules. I’ve got a Perfect Nano, 1064. Yeah, everything.

Trish

So anything to do with the skin? If anyone needs lasers like sunspots, rejuvenation wrinkles, get rid of pigment, anything like that you can cover the whole lot.

Lourette

Yes, yeah, I’m very confident that I can create healthy skin and that covers all of the skin conditions like that.

Trish

I love that. And you’re the major thing that you do when you’re treating people is pretty much laser and light.

Lourette

Yes, yeah, we don’t waste time with other things. I often see people trying to target some damage with something else and they do courses and courses where I know we’re gonna get a 80 to 90% improvement with one treatment. So when it comes to these things, it’s definitely laser light for me.

Trish

Yeah, fantastic. I totally agree with you because I’ve had lots of things done that take a long time, that hurt and all that sort of thing. But I’ve never had the dramatic results or for me, I’m a HALO. Like, I love the HALO so I’ve never had the results with anything that I’ve had with the HALO and that’s only one device.

Lourette

Absolutely. It’s so amazing. I saw HALO for the first time last month when we were in Dubai. I literally ran to the machine. I couldn’t be, it was such a fangirl moment for me. I don’t have HALO in the Dermology clinics. I’m dreaming of getting a HALO but yeah, so it’s definitely a fantastic device.

Trish

Yep. Awesome. And before we go, I do want to ask you as well, like, what’s your plan in the future? Because you’ve got three clinics, a fourth one about to pop out and you’re going to like, take over the world?

Lourette

Well have you put it that way. I always say there’s this sense of urgency in me. It’s just getting bigger and bigger. And I’ve got this thing we like I said, I’m a business woman, I want to grow my brand. I’ve been in the company for eight years before I got that opportunity where I could become the CEO of it. And the moment I became that I took my chance to branch out and only then we branched out to three clinics. And at the moment, the fourth one is in the pipeline and the plan is definitely to go international.

Trish

Fantastic. I’ll have to keep my eyes and ears peeled. Because that’s sort of a clinic that I have to go to to have something done. It’s quick, it’s efficient, and it works and you’re out the door.

Lourette

Yes, that’s the thing. But saying that also, I love combining it with, so that I niche with laser and light. But I do very well in clinics or in surroundings with other doctors or with doctors and other specialists during medical injectable procedures and everything else. It’s such a good combination that you can work and to work together as specialists to create the ultimate plan for your patient, which is the most important at the end of the day.

Trish

That’s so true. You’re so right. Well, look, I gotta say, it’s been an absolute pleasure to meet you and I’ve been so excited to do this with you because as soon as I met you on Instagram, I’m like, I love your stuff. I just love watching it all the time and especially in bed at night.

Lourette

Yeah, it’s quite a binge watching channel. Thank you so much. I love chatting to you and it’s so nice to finally meet you and I’m looking forward to the future together.

Trish
